Tutoral: How to Make Sheer Black Polish + Sheer Outline Design

I can't even remember the last tutorial that I did. It has been far too long. So today I want to show you guys how to do this fun, gothic design! I'll show you how to make a sheer black polish and how to do this polka dot / outline design.

Supplies You Will Need:

  • A dotting tool: if you don't have a dotting tool you can use a bobby pin, a pen, or anything small and circular!
  • Nail art brush: it's best if you have one like mine where it is long and thin. You could use a tooth pick but it will be much harder.
  •  Black sheer polish: continue reading to see how you make one!
  • Black polish: I'm using Rimmel London Hot Black to Go.
  • Matte top coat: this is optional but I like this design best with a matte finish!
How To Make a Sheer Black Polish:

Making a sheer black polish is a really easy thing to do! You will need a bottle of top coat and some black polish. All you need to do is drip the black polish into the top coat like I did shown above. Every 5-10 drops of black polish you drip in, you should put on the cap and shake it. Continue doing this until you have to black to clear ratio that you want. I didn't count but I think I put around 30 drops of black into it.

Sheer Polish Design:

Step One: Paint your nails two coats of your new sheer polish. You may want to do more or less coats depending on how sheer your polish is.

Step Two: Take your dotting tool and make dots on your nails. A good idea is if your nails have stains on them that the sheer black polish didn't cover up, then cover the stain up with a dot!

Step Three: Take your brush and outline around your nail. This part takes a lot of practice. You can see that I messed up a lot and painted on my cuticles instead. It's okay though because that is really easy to fix! You just take a small angled brush with acetone to clean up the excess.

Step Four: Clean up your cuticles with acetone and finish with a matte top coat! Like I said before the matte top coat is optional but I really like the smoky effect that it gives the design.

I hope you liked this tutorial! Let me know if you guys want tutorials more often. If you recreate the look share it with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! Use the hashtag #apolishedbookworm. Have a great day!

#31DC2 Day 25 Abstraction

Hi friends! I created a new tumblr for the blog today! I plan to actually post there (unlike my last tumblr). You can find the new tumblr here. You can also just click on the tumblr logo on the top left of the blog.

But today I am continuing on with the 31 Day Challenge 2.0. Today's theme is abstraction and I free handed an abstract rose with monochromatic purple polishes. I used Sally Hansen I Lilac You, Essie Play Date, NYC French White Tip, and NYC Palm on The Beach. I used NYC Matte Me Crazy for a matte finish.

#31DC2 Day 17 Favorite Season

Hey guys! I'm here with Day 17 of the 31 Day Challenge. I am 2 days behind on this and trying to catch up! Day 17's prompt is "Favorite Season" and my favorite is Fall! I love all of the beautiful weather, colorful trees, holiday atmosphere, and my birthday is in the fall! So I tried a fall design today: multicolored leaves! I am really happy with this design.

For this design I used OPI You're So Vain-illa as my base coat. I painted my leaves free handed with a small nail art brush. I used NYC Hamptons Peach, Sinful Colors Feel The Vibe, Sally Hansen Tan Lime, OPI Jade is the New Black, Rimmel London Sage All The Rage, Nicole by OPI Hit The Lights, Sally Girl Banana, NYC Red Velvet Rope, and OPI Sorry I'm Fizzy Today. I topped it off with NYC Matte Me Crazy for the perfect matte finish!

#31DC2 Day 6 Monochromatic: Coffee Nail Art

Hello friends! Today is the 6th day of the 31 Day Challenge 2.0. This is one of my favorite prompts: monochromatic (shades of one color).  For this prompt I made an idea that I have had for a while come to life. Coffee nail art! I love coffee, really it is a miracle that I ever lived without it. My personal favorite right now is Starbucks salted mocha frappucino. Yummmm!

or this design I used a nail art brush and painted it all free hand. I used OPI You're So Vain-illa as my base. Then I used Sinful Colors Nirvana, Elf Smoky Brown, and NYC Black Velvet for my coffee beans. I think this design looks a lot better matte, so I finished with NYC Matte About You.

Essie Butler Please Swatches

Hey guys! How has your weekend been? Mine was great! I went and visited some family in Wisconsin! I had a blast.

Today I have swatches of Essie's Butler Please. All I can say is thank you Kohl's! They send out a $10 gift every month or so and I always use it to get some Essie! I really love this color. This polish is from Essie's 2012 Winter Collection! It is a really pretty purplish blue that dries matte. I was kind of surprised when I saw that it was heading to the matte direction, but it was a good surprise. Here are the swatches:
